Huskies fall to Gaitors 23-17 in Interlock Action

(Halifax, NS)  In AUS / RSEQ Interlock action at Huskies Stadium, the Bishop's Gaiters defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 23-17 Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 903.

Mathieu Demers (Quebec City, QC) went 13 for 28 for 146 yards and a touchdown. Subway player of the game Vincent Pruneau (Stoneham, QC) had 13 carries for 70 yards and Jamall Hyman Hamilton (Toronto, ON) had 12 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown to power the Gaiters offence. Additional Gaitors with a big game were Jacob Nutbrown (Lennoxville, QC) 6 tackles and Ryan Hector (Brampton, ON) 2 tackles and an interception to lead the Gaiters on defence.

The Huskies had 268 yards of total offence, compared to 249 for the Gaiters.

The Huskies used turnovers to get off to a strong start when an interception from Andreas Robinson (Dartmouth, NS) led to Trevor Erdman (Ardrossan, AB) completing a 20 yard touchdown pass to D'Shawn Miller (Brampton, ON) to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead.

Saint Mary's used a forced fumble to get a second major off an 8 yard touchdown run from Derek Pisani (Newmarket, ON) to make it 14-0 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Hamilton rushed in from 6 yards to cut the Saint Mary's lead to 14-7. Ideen Samadi (Edmonton, AB) booted a field goal to give the Huskies a 17-7 lead at halftime.

In the third, Saint Mary's conceded a safety to narrow the gap to 17-9. Vincent Dube (Montymagny, QC) hit a field goal to make it 17-12. Demers then connected with Trevon Millings (Laval, QC) for a 43 yard touchdown pass to give the Gaiters a 20-12 lead after a successful 2 point conversion. Dube increased the lead with another field goal, the last of 16 unanswered points for the Gaiters in the second half.

Lucas Cristovao (Toronto, ON) had 7.5 tackles and 1.5 sacks, and Mandella Loggale (Edmonton, AB) had 5 tackles and an interception to anchor the Huskies defence. Erdman went 12 for 23 for 140 yards and a touchdown, and Pisani had 11 carries for 55 yards and a major to lead Saint Mary's on offence.

Both teams play their next game next Saturday. Bishop's hosts the McGill Redmen at 3 pm EST. Saint Mary's is on the road in Antigonish against the Saint Francis Xavier X-Men at 2 pm AST.
