Berglund leads the Huskies over Mount Allison 29-21 in Friday night football

(Halifax, NS)--Brock Berglund (San Diego, California) rushed for two touchdowns and threw another to help the Saint Mary's Huskies defeat the Mount Allison Mounties 29-21 in AUS football action Friday night.

 

SMU's fourth-year quarterback saw his Huskies trail 7-0 early in the opening minutes on Mount Allison's Idahosa Yorke (Bowmanville, ON) 88-yard punt return for a touchdown.  

 

Brian Hope (Port Coquitlan, BC) put SMU on the board with a 20-yard field goal, trimming the Mountie lead 7-3. 

 

Mount Allison traded a safety for field position and the Huskies trailed 7-5 with 14:47 in the second quarter.

 

Hope's second field goal of the half, from 26 yards, gave SMU a slim 8-7 lead with 12:06 left in the half.

 

Both teams traded two and outs amid several punts when the Huskies scored late in the half on a 10 yard toss from Berglund to D'Shawn Miller (Brampton, ON) and ended the half leading 15-7.

 

The Mounties took possession in the second half and used a three play, 59 yard drive to pull within one, 15-14, on a four yard touchdown run by  running back Kiel Ambursley (Toronto, ON) with 11:36 left in the third quarter.

 

The Huskies replied with a 92 yard, eight play drive, capped off with Berglund's one-yard plunge with 8:48 left in the third saw SMU up 22-14.

 

Berglund's second rushing touchdown came with 5:40 left in the 4th quarter as he scrambled to his right from Mount Allison's two yard line, he raced for the end zone and extended the ball as he dove over the pylon.

 

The touchdown gave Saint Mary's a 29-14 lead.

 

The Mounties rallied late in the final minutes, scoring a Troy Downton (Burlington, ON) touchdown on a five yard run, bringing Mount Allison within eight points, 29-21.

 

DeAndre Smith's (Dunn, North Carolina) interception with 38 seconds left sealed the Huskies victory 29-21.

 

SMU had more first downs (24-16) and more total offence (427-168) than the Mounties.

 

Saint Mary's rushed 41 times for 192 yards compared to 141 yards on 35 attempts for Mount Allison.

 

Berglund was 14-32 for 272 yards and one touchdown and added 37 yards rushing while teammates Leonardo Mantuila (Edmonton, AB) added 82 yards and Derek Pisani (Newmarket, ON) had 52.

 

Downton went 9 for 18 and threw 35 yards and two interceptions for the Mounties and Ambursley finished with 127 rushing yards on 24 attempts.

 

Saint Mary's Miller had seven catches for 170 yards and teammate Rick LeMoignan (Edmonton, AB) had four receptions.

 

Antoine Lyte-Myers (Scarborough, ON) paced the Huskies defence with two interceptions.

 

Both Mount Allison's Kyle Horsman (Moncton, NB) and SMU's Jadarius Ceasar (Tuscaloosa, Alabama) finished with eight total tackles each.

 

Mount Allison drops to 1-4 and next travels to 1-4 Acadia.

 

Saint Mary's improves to 2-3 and next hosts 4-1 StFX for Homecoming.

 

Both games are 2 pm Saturday, October 15th.
