(Halifax, NS)--The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the visiting Acadia Axemen 97-89 in their season home opener, Saturday night in AUS men's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.
Marquis Clayton (Halifax, NS) had a team-high 38 points for the Huskies who lead 27-17 after 10 minutes.
The Huskies increased their lead with a 28-20 second quarter frame and lead 55-37 at half.
Acadia chipped away at the Huskies lead in the third quarter and outscored SMU 29-19 in the frame and trailed 74-66 after thirty minutes.
Both teams were even in the fourth quarter (23-23) and SMU held on for the 97-89 victory.
Saint Mary's improves to 2-0 while Acadia drops to 0-2.
Next up for Acadia is a road trip versus 0-2 Cape Breton University November 11th, while SMU host cross-town rivals the Dal Tigers (2-0) Wednesday, November 9th at the Homburg Centre.
Tip-off for both games is 8 p.m.
