Huskies 70-66 in their final regular season over Capers

Sydney, NS - The Cape Breton University Capers (0-20) left it all out on the court in their final game, but will end the season without a win, following a 70-66 loss to the Saint Mary's Huskies (13-7) in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action Saturday night at the Sullivan Field House.

The game started with great defense from both sides that carried through the entire game. The game started out with the teams exchanging leads throughout, until the Huskies went on a 9-2 run to close out the opening frame.

It appeared the Huskies might have been beginning to pull away with the lead in the second quarter, going up by as many as 21 points, but the Capers, lead in the quarter by Kenny Jean-Louis (Montreal, QC), hit a three pointer then followed it up with a jump shot from the free throw line which helped bring the score to 34-24 by halftime.

The third quarter featured the two bigs from the Capers and the Huskies going head-to-head, both leading their team on the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Theon Reefer (Toronto, ON) scored 12 points in the third quarter alone. Certainly, not to be outdone, Kyle Hankins (Burlington, ON) scored an even more impressive 14 points in the third. This included back-to-back three point plays in which he got fouled and a huge two-handed slam dunk that brought the Capers fans to their feet. However, the Huskies went on another run in the third to putting the score at 56-48 going into the fourth.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, the Capers fought their way right back into it. A big three pointer by Christian Affolter (Bern, Switz) brought the Capers to within two points, making the score 63-61 with 3:14 to go, but a trip to the free throw line from Brian Rouse (Mississauga, ON) and a steal by Marquis Clayton (Halifax, NS) which lead to a dunk by Reefer was enough to put the game out of reach.

For the Huskies, Theon Reefer had a game-high 20 points, and made it a double-double with 11 rebounds. He also hit all six of his free throws, some of which came late in the game and proved to be huge. Achuil Lual (Ottawa, ON) notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Brian Rouse added 12 points.

Kyle Hankins outscored everybody in the game with 23 points, and brought down nine rebounds and two assists. Kenny Jean-Louis scored 16 points, with nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

The Saint Mary's Huskies will head to Halifax to play in the AUS Championship on March 3-5th at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax.
