Huskies clinch playoff spot in 75-68 win over X-Men

Antigonish, NS – The Saint Mary's Huskies (9-6) defeated the StFX X-Women (6-10) by a 75-68 margin Tuesday evening on Coach K Court at the StFX Oland Centre. The victory was worth four points in the AUS standings for the Huskies.

Saint Mary's was led by Subway player of the game Kemar Alleyne (Toronto, ON) who netted 23 points and pulled in nine rebounds.

Julius Antoine (Vaughan, ON) kept up his high scoring pace as of late for the X-Men and scored a game-high 24 points, along with five rebounds and a pair of steals.

The X-Men got out to a fast start in the game, building up a 24-15 lead after the first quarter. Antoine scored 12 of his points in the opening frame, including a pair of three-pointers.

The second quarter saw the Huskies get back into the game as they out-paced the X-Men 24-14 that lead to a small 39-38 edge at halftime.

The third quarter was back and forth action but low scoring as the Huskies took a 54-52 lead after 30 minutes of play.

The Huskies had a balanced attack from their starting five throughout the fourth quarter though the X-Men kept pace and were only down by a single point, 65-64 with just over two minutes to play.

The Huskies hung on and were up by three points with 37 seconds left in the game, forcing the X-Men to foul to gain possession but time ran out on the home team and SMU held on for the 75-68 victory, one that officially clinched them a berth in the upcoming AUS championship.

The X-Men are currently tied for fifth place with Memorial and with the upcoming weekend off, they will next host Memorial in two keys games at home on February 17th and 18th.

The Huskies will be back in action at home to Acadia on Friday night, February 9th.
