Huskies fall to Reds

FREDERICTON, NB) Chris Spurrell (Quispamsis, NB) dropped 34 points as the UNB Reds routed the Saint Mary's Huskies 91-69 on Saturday night.

Spurrell's efforts earned him the Subway Player of the Game nod.

"I knew that we had a few guys out so I knew I was going to have to come out and try and get everyone going," said Spurrell.

Spurrell was also honoured before the game as he was presented the prestigious Wright Family Scholarship.

UNB improves to 4-and-3 with the win, while SMU drops to 3-and-4

The win was worth four points for the Reds in the Atlantic University Sport standings.

UNB's impressive performance came in the face of playing with a short bench, playing only eight players due to a plethora of injuries.

The Reds came out on the right end of a tightly contested first quarter leading 26-22.

UNB would add to their lead with an even stronger second quarter, outscoring Saint Mary's 24-17 for a 50-39 lead at the half.

Spurrell put up 25 points in the opening half and Matur Maluach (Sydney, AUS) added an exclamation point, hitting a half court, three-point shot as the half expired.

UNB continued their dominant play with a 7-0 run to start the third, and the Huskies continued to struggle, and the Reds padded their lead to 73-55 heading into the fourth.

A similar story would play out in the final quarter and the Reds would cruise to a 91-69 victory.

Maluach had 29 points in the win, while Nikita Kasongo (Chateauguay, QC) led the Huskies with 23.

This was the final game of the first half for both teams.

They both resume play on January 4th. The Reds return to action, at home against St FX, while the Huskies will be on the road to take on the Cape Breton Capers.
