Huskies win fourth straight game in style with 98-76 win over Sea-Hawks

HALIFAX, N.S. - The Saint Mary's Huskies won their fourth straight game in convincing style on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Memorial Sea-Hawks 98-76 at the Homburg Centre in Halifax.

After the Huskies defeated the Sea-Hawks 91-88 on Saturday night, the Huskies sported an 8-5 record coming into Sunday afternoon's game, while the Sea-Hawks were 6-7.

The Huskies got off to a hot start, scoring on each of their first four offensive possessions, and a Jace Colley (East Preston, NS) slam-dunk gave the home team an 8-0 lead just two minutes into the game. The Sea-Hawks responded and cut the lead to 18-15, but Huskies guard Shae Linton-Brown (Toronto, ON) drilled back-to-back three's, followed by a three from reserve guard Trayvone Clayton (Halifax, NS), to give the Huskies a 29-20 lead after the first quarter.

Saint Mary's began the second quarter in similar fashion, getting out in transition and finding easy opportunities, led by the speed of guards Dontae Mitchell (Vaughan, ON) and Johneil Johnson (Lake Echo, NS). Linton-Brown's fourth three-pointer of the first half gave the Huskies their largest lead, 44-29 with 5:15 remaining. The Sea-Hawks were able to reduce the Huskies lead to 10 points, and Saint Mary's led 50-40 at the half.

Linton-Brown had an outstanding first half, scoring 16 points on 6/8 from the field and 4/5 from three, while Mitchell chipped in 10. The Huskies shot 54% from the field (20/37), 39% from three (5/13) and a perfect 5/5 from the free throw line through the first 20 minutes.

The Sea-Hawks were led by forward Nicholas Tuff, who scored 11 first half points. Memorial shot just 33% (15/45) from the floor and 24% (4/17) from beyond the arc, but were kept within striking distance thanks to eight offensive rebounds, which they turned into eight second chance points.

The Huskies energy was just too much for the Sea-Hawks in the second half. The home team opened the quarter on a 23-5 run, capped off by a highlight reel play when Linton-Brown stole the ball and fed Colley for a thunderous slam, sending the Homburg Centre crowd into chaos. Sea-Hawks reserve guards Daniel Foo and Caleb d'Entremont hit back-to-back threes to end the quarter, but the Huskies outscore the Sea-Hawks 27-15 to take a 77-55 lead into the final frame.

With the game in hand, both teams emptied their benches in the fourth quarter, with a pair of Sea-Hawks reserves, Matt Torraville and Merreck Mintz recording their first career AUS points. All 11 Huskies scored, with forward Sam Gillett (Halifax, NS), recording his first career basket.

Mitchell was named Subway Player of the Game in his final home game at the Homburg Centre, scoring 13 of his team-high 23 points in the second half, and adding three rebounds and three assists. Colley chipped in 18 points, six rebounds and two blocks, while Linton-Brown had 18 points, 4 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

"My teammates told me to be more aggressive, so I took that challenge and we ended up with the win," said Mitchell post-game. "The key thing that (Coach Taussig) talks about is gaining momenteum for the playoffs and playing our best basketball in March, so that's what were trying to do, get better every practice and every game."

The Sea-Hawks were led by Tuff with 15 points, while forward Boris Ristanovic added 14 points.

The Huskies fourth straight win improved their record to 9-5 on the season. Saint Mary's hits the road to Fredericton to finish off the regular season with a pair of games against the UNB REDS (5-8) on Friday and Saturday.

The Sea-Hawks fourth straight loss dropped their record to 6-8. They'll be back on home court next weekend as they host the UPEI Panthers (7-5) for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday.
