Tommies edge Huskies 2-1 in Shootout

The St. Thomas Tommies earned their first win of the year, edging the Saint Mary's Huskies 2-1 in a shootout in front of 412 spectators at the Grant-Harvey Centre, Friday night.

Subway Player of the Game Tyson Teichmann made 31 saves in the win, while Cole Cheveldave made 21 in the loss.

"We have to go 60 minutes all out in order to get those results. It's what we've been preaching at them for a while now," Tommies head coach Kyle McAllister said after the game.

"It's good to see them get rewarded for that work."

The Tommies opened the scoring early after Shane McColgan intercepted a pass and found Anthony Latina on the break, who beat Cheveldave.

"He was all over the ice tonight," McAllister said of Latina. "He was the best player we had out there tonight."

The lead was short-lived though, as SMU's Alex Cord capitalized on a cross-crease pass to tie the game 1-1 just five minutes in.

The Huskies outshot the Tommies 14-5 in the frame.

After a scoreless second and third period, the game headed to overtime.

The Tommies started the extra frame on the power play, but weren't able to beat Cheveldave. The Huskies pressured late trying to find the game-winner, but were only able to generate one shot on goal. With overtime solving nothing, the game had to be decided in a shootout.

Latina was the first Tommies' shooter and he finished what he started, beating Cheveldave low for his second goal of the game. Teichmann followed through between the pipes, stopping all three Huskies shooters.

"We got three points in two weekends in two-goals for. That's a big tip of the cap to Teichmann. He's a big reason for that," McAllister said.

Teichmann was named the game's first star, while Cheveldave and Latina were named the second and third stars, respectively.
