Cord lifts Huskies to overtime win over UdeM

(Moncton, NB) – An overtime goal by Alex Cord, with 2:57 left to play, after intercepting a pass in the neutral zone, lifted the Saint Mary's University Huskies (7-4-2=14pts, 4th place) to a 3-2 win over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (6-6-1=13pts, 5th place) in an Atlantic University Sport men's hockey game played Saturday evening in front of over 600 spectators at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.

Cord went on a breakaway against goaltender Adrien Lemay and slid the puck between the legs for the win. Kyle Pereira, on the power play in the first and Michael Curtis, with the lone second period goal, completed the visitors scoring. Alex Noël (Jean-Sébastien Fournier, Jean-François Plante), with the first of the game, in the initial period and defenceman Pierre Durepos (Danny Chiasson), following an end to end rush, midway in the third, replied for the Aigles Bleus. Durepos evened the chances to 2-2 and sent the game to overtime.

Adrien Lemay had 29 shots in the loss while Cole Cheveldave, handled 25 for the win. Moncton did gain one point of four over the weekend and will play its next home game on Wednesday evening as it will host University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds (9-2-2=20pts, 2nd place).

''The Huskies have an aggressive team with lots of intensity,'' stated Moncton coach Serge Bourgeois. "They are fast and I thought we played them well tonight, especially in the third period, our best. Pierre Durepos scored a nice shorthanded goal. They played us well defensively by keeping us on the outside. I am happy with the way we played, much better than on Friday evening. We are going through a slump right now and we sometimes lose our confidence. I thought we were solid in the third period, tonight. We have another challenge on Wednesdsay evening."

''It is always exciting to score a shorthanded goal like that,'' added Pierre Durepos. "We did exercise a much better effort tonight compared to the third period of Friday, but we are in the business of winning games. Losing is not interesting. The game was physical with intensity, but that is not a surprise against the Huskies."
