SMU heads to the U Cup with a 4-3 triple OT win over Moncton

The second goal of the game by Keith Getson, at 2:20 on the power play in the third overtime period lifted the Saint Mary's University Huskies (2-0) to a 4-3 win over Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (0-2) on Wednesday evening in the second game of the Subway Atlantic University Sport consolation best of 3 series in front of over 1100 spectators at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.

 

The Huskies move onto the U SPORTS men's hockey championship tournament in Halifax next week following the marathon 102:20 minutes of play.

 

Anthony Repaci and Dawson Theede, the last one on the power play, scored the other visitor's goals, as they were trailing 3-1 after two periods. They evened the chances in the third to send the game in overtime. The first two overtime periods did not permit any team to win. Several chances were missed by both teams and both goaltenders did a great job.

 

Vincent Deslauriers (Francis Thibeault, Édouard Michaud) at 4:42; Édouard Michaud (Deslaurieurs, Alexis Roy) at 14 :51 and Danick Crète (Thibeault, Joey Richard), at 17:23 did give Moncton a 3-1 lead in the second period. There was no first period scoring. Subway player of the game, goaltender Étienne Montpetit faced 53 shots in a losing cause compared to 45 for his opponent, Eric Brassard. Moncton was 0 for 5 on the power play and Saint Mary's, 2 for 3.

 

Moncton ended the game with 14 tired players on the bench, including 9 forwards and 5 defensemen, due to injuries.
