Huskies complete six-point weekend with 4-0 win over Mounties

Recap by Allan April / SMU Huskies Athletics

The Saint Mary's Huskies men's soccer team completed a successful six-point road trip with a commanding 4-0 win over the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville, NB on Sunday.

One day after Huskies second year forward Sean Freeman (Halifax, NS) scored his first career hat-trick in Saturday's 3-2 win over the UPEI Panthers, Freeman got the offence going again early, as he intercepted a pass in Panthers territory and chipped the ball past Mounties keeper Matthew Kiropoulos (Brandon, MB) to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead just four minutes in. The goal was Freeman's fourth of the weekend and AUS leading fifth of the season.

In the 54th minute, Huskies forward James Spence (Hammonds Plains, NS), delivered a pass in the box to forward Ahmed Ibrahim (Halifax, NS), who made no mistake, beating Kiropoulos to double the Huskies lead to 2-0.

Moments later, Ibrahim took a corner kick, and found Huskies captain Cian Tousignant-Osiadhail (Timberlea, NS) at the edge of the box. The fifth year midfielder took one touch, then fired a left-footed laser of a shot, low and to the right post, to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead in the 56th minute.

The Huskies fourth and final goal was also the most spectacular. In the 74th minute, Freeman played a ball back to midfielder Neil Spires (Hubley, NS) who took two touches towards the middle of the pitch and rocketed a curling, right-footed shot from 35 yards out, directly into the top right corner of the goal.

Huskies midfielder Cian Tousignant-Osiadhail was named Subway Player of the Game.

Huskies second year goalkeeper Ryan Davis (Lake Loon, NS) was credited with three saves for his first career clean sheet, while Mounties keeper Kiropolous was credited with one save.

The win improved the Huskies record to 3-1-0 on the campaign. After securing six points on this weekend's road trip, Saint Mary's return to Halifax to take on the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Huskies Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 3:15 p.m.

The Mounties loss dropped their record to 0-4-0. They'll next be in action on Friday, Sept. 23 as they host the Acadia Axemen in Sackville, with kick-off scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
