Huskies blank Panthers 2-0 for first win of season

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI - Colton Kaizer and Colby Mercer each scored for the Saint Mary's Huskies as they defeated the UPEI Panthers 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in Charlottetown, PEI.

Both teams were evenly matched for most of the game, trading possession and limiting each other's scoring chances. However, it was the Huskies who capitalized first, breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute.

The goal came from a well-orchestrated play, as Sean Freeman (Halifax, NS) split the Panthers' defence with a precise pass to Nathaniel Langille (St. Margaret's Bay, NS). Langille then sent a cross through the six-yard box, where Colton Kaizer (Chester Basin, NS) was waiting to slot home an easy tap-in.

Despite their best efforts, the Panthers struggled to create meaningful scoring opportunities, with the Huskies' defence maintaining a tight grip on the game and keeping UPEI's attack at a distance.

As the game entered extra time, the Panthers pushed everyone forward, including their goalkeeper, in search of a last-minute goal. With the penalty area crowded during a corner kick, the Huskies seized their moment on the counterattack. The ball found its way to Scott Firth (Windsor Junction, NS), who booted it ahead to Colby Mercer (Beaverbank, NS). In a race against Max VanWiechen, Mercer got to the loose ball first and calmly finished on the breakaway, sealing the 2-0 win for Saint Mary's.

The Panthers record now stands at 1-2-0 on the season. They'll be back in action on Sunday, visiting the Moncton Aigles Bleus (1-0-2) at 3:15 p.m.

The Huskies record improves to 1-2-0 on the campaign. They'll continue their road swing on Sunday, visiting the Mount Allison Mounties (1-2-0) at 3:15 p.m. in Sackville, N.B.
