Huskies top Reds 59-45 in 2nd weekend game

(HALIFAX, N.S)--The CIS No. 5 SMU Huskies defeated the visiting UNB Varsity Reds 59-45 in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action Saturday night. SMU swept both games this weekend.

SMU scored the first seven points to start the game and built a 17-8 lead after 10 minutes.
The Huskies doubled up UNB in second quarter scoring and went into the locker room up 33-16 at half.
 
UNB went 7-8 from the foul line in the third quarter, out scoring SMU 13-12 in the frame but SMU still led 45-29.
Both teams shot the ball better in the fourth quarter, with the V-Reds out scoring the Huskies 16-14 in the final frame.
Grace Wade led the V-Reds and all scorers with 12 points and Laura Kaye added 10 points for UNB, who fall to 2-2 on the year.
And trio of Huskies-Carlie Nugent, Angelina Carvery, and Shanicka Wood-scored 10 points apiece while Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse and Alexandra Smye added nine points each.
 
Laura Langille had seven points and grabbed seven rebounds for SMU and Katrina Murrell had two points and nine rebounds in the win.  Veronica Vaickus also scored two points for SMU.
Saint Mary's outshot UNB 33.9% (21-62) to 33.3% (17-51) from the floor and from beyond the three-point line 22.7% (5-22) to 18.2% (2-11).
The View-Reds held a slight free throw advantage over the Huskies on the night, 75% (9-12) versus 66.7% (12-18) and both teams were even in the rebounding department, 40-40.
With the win, Saint Mary's improves to 3-0 and sits tied with Dalhousie for 1st place in AUS play.
 
Dalhousie hosts Saint Mary's November 21 at 6pm in a crucial four-point game.
