Huskies get two wins at Memorial

(St. John's, NF)  The Saint Mary's Huskies got off on the right foot with an 85-54 win over the Memorial Sea~Hawks in game one and another 85-54 win in game two. 

In the first game of the AUS season. The Sea~Hawks opened the game strong and took an early 12-10 lead behind 8 first quarter points from 2nd year guard Sydney Ezekiel. However, the Huskies quickly countered with a run of their own and lead after the first 22-17. Saint Mary's controlled the tempo for the 2nd half of the first quarter and did a good job of getting to the free throw line, where they went 10-10 to start the game.

The Huskies were able to build on this momentum in the 2nd quarter and they stretched the lead to 20 points. Leading the way in the 2nd quarter for the Huskies was substitute, Rachelle Coward, with 13 points. Coward was red hot in the 2nd, making 3 of 4 shots from long range. The Huskies went into the break with a 55-33 lead on the Sea~Hawks.

Memorial came out of the break focused and made the first run to start the second half. Memorial guard, Sydney Stewart, lead the team in the 3rd quarter with 10 points on 5 of 8 shooting. It was the Huskies who finished the 3rd strong and pushed their lead to 25 points.

The 4th quarter was much like the 3rd quarter as both teams battled hard defensively and traded baskets for the final 10 minutes. The Huskies won the last quarter by a score of 13-7, which pushed the final score to 85-54. The leading scorer for the Huskies was Rachelle Coward with 23 points. Memorial was led by Sydney Stewart with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Sydney Ezekiel also chipped in with 16 points and 4 rebounds.

Memorial 54 Saint Mary's 85 - Sunday, November 8th

After a strong opening game by the defending AUS Champion Huskies, the Sea~Hawks came out with a solid effort in the Sunday match-up. It was team effort in the opening quarter for the Sea~Hawks as 6 players registered points. The Huskies got their early scoring from Kennisha- Shanice Luberisse, as she finished the first with 5 points and 3 rebounds. The Sea~Hawks had the lead after the first quarter, 13-9.

It was much the same in the second quarter for the Sea~Hawks, as they had a balanced scoring attack. Brooklyn Wright was the leading scoring at the half with 6 points (2 for 3 from 3-point range). The Huskies got a strong second quarter effort from Angelina Carvery, as she netted 7 points to help close the gap and send the teams into the half time break tied at 25-25.

However after the halftime break, it was all Huskies. They quickly jumped out to a 10 point lead and never looked back. The Huskies outscored the Sea~Hawks 26-10 in the third quarter and followed that by outscoring the Sea~Hawks 19-8 in the fourth.

Leading scorer's for Memorial were Brooklynn Wright with 11 points and 2 rebounds, Sydney Stewart with 7 points and 6 rebounds, and Andreanne Ennis with 7 points and 2 rebounds. Leading scorers for SMU were Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse with 18 points and 6 rebounds, Angelina Carvery with 16 points, and Rachelee Coward with 12 points and 2 rebounds.

The Sea~Hawks visit the Dalhousie Tigers for a two game set on November 13th and 14th in Halifax.
