Wood Gets 14 Points and 18 Rebounds, Huskies Beat X-Women 64-57
(Halifax, NS) The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Saint Francis Xavier X-Women 64-57 in AUS women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Scotiabank Centre as part of the Varsity Showdown event. The games today were part of a men's hockey / basketball showdown between mainland Nova Scotia teams.
Subway player of the game Shanieka Wood (Ajax, ON) had a double double with 14 points and 18 rebounds, while also adding one steal. Rochelle Coward (Dartmouth, NS) lead all scorers with 19 points. Coward leads the team in scoring with a 15.2 ppg average good for 6th in the league. Other scorers for the Huskies were Kennisha Luberisse (Montreal, QC) had 9 points and 3 steals and Angelina Carvery added 8 points, and two steals. Both teams played to a tied first quarter at 10-10. The Huskies went out in front in the second quarter, when they took a 17-14 lead to make it 27-24 at the half. The Huskies retained their lead in the third a 15-11 to make it 44-35 after three quarters. The X-Women managed to win the fourth quarter 22-20, but it wasn't enough to get back in the game.
Lindsay Lessard (Waterloo, ON) had 18 points and 8 rebounds, and Korenda Colley (Dartmouth, NS) scored 12 points to lead the X-Women in scoring. Courtney Kilyk (Fonthill, ON) had 3 steals and Lessard added two to pace the X-Women defence.
Both teams are back in action this upcoming Friday and Saturday in home doubleheaders. Saint Mary's hosts the UNB Varsity Reds at 6:00 pm at the Homburg Center on Friday and Saturda, while the X-Women face the UPEI Panthers at 6 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
