Langille scores 25, SMU tops Acadia 71-61

(Halifax, NS)—The CIS No. 4 Saint Mary's Huskies used Laura Langille's double-double to defeat the Acadia Axewonen 71-61 Friday evening in AUS basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

Langille, the Bedford, Nova Scotia native, poured in 25 points and hauled 11 rebounds for the Huskies, who improve to 14-1 with 36 points on the year.

Phoenix, Arizona native Paloma Anderson paced the Axewomen with 14 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

Acadia dropped out of the CIS Top 10 this week at 15-2, good for top spot in the AUS loop with 38 points.

The Axewomen led 21-18 after the opening quarter.

Saint Mary's used a 23-6 second quarter score to take a 41-27 lead at half.

Acadia outscored SMU 16-13 in the third quarter and the Huskies took a 54-43 lead after thirty minutes.

The Axewomen outscored SMU 18-17 in the final frame and Saint Mary`s held on for the 71-61 victory.

Alexandra Berry (Yarmouth, NS) netted 13 points and 14 rebounds for Acadia while teammates Chanel Smith (Halifax, NS) and Katie Ross (Bedford, NS) chipped in 12 and eight points apiece.

Rachel Coward (Dartmouth, NS) had 16 points and added four rebounds for Saint Mary's.

Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse's (Montreal, QC) double-double stat line for SMU read 12 points and 10 rebounds while Angelina Carvery (Halifax, NS) finished with 10 points.

Acadia`s off for a week and hosts fourth-place 9-7 UNB (20 points) February 19th.

The Huskies host third-place 11-5 CBU (28 points) Saturday evening at 6 pm in another four-point game.
