Huskies spilt UNB weekend series with 61-56 win

(HALIFAX, NS)—The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the visiting UNB Varsity Reds 61-56 in Atlantic university sport women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon from the Homburg Centre.

A trio of Huskies—Jasmine Cain (Halifax, NS), Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, QC), and Shanieka Wood (Ajax, ON)—scored 11 points apiece in the win.

UNB led by three points, 22-19 after 10 minutes and SMU used a 16-15 second quarter score to cut the Varsity Reds lead to two, 37-35 at the half.

Saint Mary's jumped out to a 13-6 third quarter score and SMU took the lead 48-45 after thirty minutes.

A 13-13 fourth quarter saw SMU hold on to their five-point lead and win 61-56.

Fifth-year guard Laura Kaye (Fredericton, NB) led all scorers with 21 points in the loss for UNB, who drop to 4-2 on the year.

Point guard Mikaela Dodig (Bolton, ON) finished with 14 points for the V-Reds while forward Emily MacLeod (Fredericton, NB) added six.

Katrina Murrell (Markham, ON) chipped in 10 points for SMU, who improve to 3-3 on the year.

Both teams wrap up their fall semester AUS schedule next week with games worth 4-points.

The Varsity Reds host 3-2 Memorial University November 25th and 26th in Fredericton while The Huskies travels down the road to cross-town rival 2-3 Dalhousie University November 21st.

Tip-off for all games is 6 pm.
