Cape Breton edge Huskies 59-58

(HALIFAX, NS)—The Saint Mary's Huskies dropped a tough 59-58 decision on Friday evening to the visiting Cape Breton University Capers in Atlantic university sport women's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

Allison Keough (Marion Bridge, NS) poured in 27 points and 19 rebounds in the win for Cape Breton. The 6-foot-1 forward went 10 for 14 from in field in forty minutes of action.

The Capers trailed 51-45 heading into the fourth quarter and clawed their way back in the final frame, doubling up the Huskies 14-7 in 10 minutes.

Down by two with 14.6 seconds left, North Sydney's Hannah Brown's two free-throws found the rim on lucky bounces and Cape Breton pulled ahead by one, 59-58.

SMU's final possession saw the Huskies shot roll over the rim and CBU found the rebound as time expired with Cape Breton holding on for the 59-58 victory.

The Huskies led 22-15 after 10 minutes and extended their cushion in the second quarter and took a 39-27 halftime lead.

A 18-12 third quarter frame had the Capers within six after 30 minutes.

The Capers improve to 12-6 with 36 points in AUS play while the loss drops SMU to 10-7, good enough for 28 points in the standings.

Toronto's Sandra Amoah and Brown each chipped in with nine points for CBU.

Ajax, Ontario's Shanieka Wood finished with 19 points and nine rebounds in SMU's loss while teammates Jasmine Cain (Halifax, NS) scored eight and Katrina Murrell (Markham, ON) seven.

Cape Breton went 21 for 28 from the free-throw line while SMU managed only 4 for 12 from the foul line.

Both teams wrap up their weekend series with a 4 p.m. tip off Saturday February 17th at the Homburg Centre as Saint Mary's celebrates graduating senior's day.
