Huskies take game one 57-53 over Seahwawks

(St. John's, NL)  The Memorial Sea-Hawks were defeated 57-53 by the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday night in AUS women's basketball action from The Field House.

The Hawks returned to home court ready to battle with Saint Mary's Huskies, with final playoff seeing on the line.  After taking both games in their previous weekend series against St. FX, Memorial hoped to extend their winning streak to four games to close out the home games this season.

The first quarter was strong for Memorial, holding Saint Mary's to just eight points, putting up 16 themselves. Sydney Stewart made her return, scoring her first points off the opening tips off a great outlet pass from Rosie Stanoev.

The second was Saint Mary's quarter, adjusting to Memorial's fast-paced offense with physicality and strong defense. After posting just eight in the first, the Huskies put up 16 to cut the game to just one point at half for Memorial, 25-24.

Coming back from half-time, Saint Mary's had a great third quarter, forcing Memorial to score only 13 in the quarter. The Huskies made there run and held it throughout the rest of the game. Despite a great rally in the fourth by the Hawks, with a clutch three-point from Brooklyn Wright, the Huskies held their composure down the stretch taking the game.

Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse had a great game for SMU, posting 19 points and forcing 6 turnovers with her steals, earning herself Subway player-of-the-game commendations.

Sydney Stewart in her return led the Hawks with 13 points; Memorial struggled overall on offense shooting just 33% from the field and under 25% from deep.

The Hawks will look to get a win tomorrow, splitting the weekend series in this crucial period as the season winds down. Tomorrow's game will be available on AUStv.ca and tips off at 12:00pm NST.
