Huskies top Tigers 73-51

(Halifax, NS) – In their first matchup of the 2019-20 season, the Dalhousie Tigers hosted the Saint Mary's Huskies at the Dalplex in midweek action. The Huskies stifling defense propelled them to a 73-51 win over the Tigers in this one.

Turnovers were the story of the first quarter, with both teams struggling to maintain possession in the opening 10 minutes.

The Huskies were aggressive on the offensive glass early, however, and were able to get out to a lead in the quarter on a tough and-one play from Lucina Beaumont (Fredericton, NB) and a long-range shot from Kendra MacKinnon (Pictou, NS) on the following possession.

Combining 10 turnovers in the quarter with shooting just 1-15 from the field, the Tigers found themselves trailing 12-4 after the opening quarter.

The Tigers were able to find new energy in the second quarter, limiting second-chance points for the Huskies and starting to find their own shooting touch from Chelsea Slawter-Wright who knocked down two from deep in the quarter.

Turnovers from the Tigers continued to be an issue late in the half, however, and the Huskies were able to capitalize on those chances by getting out and running the floor in transition to pick up 8 points off turnovers in the quarter.

The teams went into the halftime break with the Huskies leading 32-20 over the Tigers.

The story remained the same in the third quarter with the Huskies defense forcing the Tigers into bad passes and turnovers. This allowed Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON) to take over the offensive game for the Huskies on the fast break.

Chloe Wilson (Dartmouth, NS) was doing her best to keep the Tigers in it with her play down low and by getting to the line, but heading into the final quarter, the Huskies lead was at 56-33.

The lead became too much in the final quarter, as MacKinnon's third shot from deep increased the lead to 30 with under five minutes to go.

As time ran out, the Huskies came away with a 73-51 win.

Lucina Beaumont earned herself the Subway Player of the Game title, finishing with 15 points and 7 rebounds in the win. Slawter-Wright finished with a game-high 18 points and 5 rebounds to lead the Tigers.

The two teams will meet up again on Saturday at the Homburg Centre.
