Clark, Huskies Cruise to 3-0 shutout win over Tommies

Fredericton, NB)  Rebecca Clark of the Saint Mary's University Huskies recorded 25 saves to lift her team over the St. Thomas University Tommies 3-0 in AUS women's hockey action Saturday night at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

The Huskies opened the scoring on the powerplay when Kaitlin Howarth snuck behind the Tommies defence and potted the loose puck for a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies extended their league leading goal differential later in the frame when Mary Worndl sniped the puck over the shoulder of the Tommies Abby Clarke to give the Huskies a 2-0 advantage.

Tommies head coach Peter Murphy felt his team could have done better to prevent the first two goals.

"They came out with a lot more pop than us," Murphy said. "I thought we did better in the second and played a good third afterwards."

The Huskies kept on rolling in the second with a goal from Nicole Blanche, who made no mistake on the rebound, extending the Huskies lead midway through the second period.

The Tommies struggled to get any offence going in the game due in part to the impressive performance of Huskies goalie Rebecca Clark, who was named the Subway Player of the Game.

"You have to do something special to beat her. Sometimes we get the thought in our mind we have to be too cute, but we had pucks and rebounds there," Murphy said.

"We also went against the two top penalty kills in the league this weekend. We had chances, and we hit two crossbars on one of the power plays."

The Tommies are back in action Wednesday night when they visit the Saint Mary's Huskies back in Halifax at 7:00 pm local time.
