Huskies end regular season with OT win

(Halifax, NS) In their last game of the regular season, the Saint Mary's Huskies women's hockey team hosted the Mount Allison Mounties this Sunday. An evenly matched game went to overtime and it was the Huskies who came away with the win.

The first period saw the Huskies struggling on the breakout at times, as the Mounties defence picked off some sloppy passes to hold the puck in. The Huskies blocked shots to keep the game relatively easy for goalie Dagny Hudspeth (Burlington, ON), who faced seven shots in the first period.

Saint Mary's used regroup passes well to generate speed and get around Mount Allison on the attack. Goalie Lindsay Wray (Courtice, ON) closed the door on any chances, leading to a scoreless first period.

Both teams had power play opportunities in the second period, but no goals were scored on the man advantage.

The Huskies finally opened the scoring with five and a half minutes to go. Coming off the bench, Taylor Gravelle (Lumsden, SK) wired a high shot past Wray.

The Mounties, however, found the equalizer ten minutes into the third period. At their blue line, Abby Beale made a heads up pass to Jessica Desautels (Oakville, ON) for a breakaway and a bar down goal.

In overtime, it was the Huskies who had all the chances, and with just under two minutes to go,  a high one timer Caleigh Meraw (Red Deer, AB) beat Wray. Brooke Murphy (Balla Philip, NB) had the assist as the Huskies came away with a 2-1 win.

The Subway Player of the Game, facing 29 shots, was Dagny Hudspeth from Saint Mary's.

The Mounties end their regular season with a record of 4-23-1, while the Huskies head to the playoffs with a record of 18-9-1. They will face the Moncton Aigles Bleues in the first round.
