MacKenzie scores OT winner as Huskies win Lobster Trap Cup over Tigers

HALIFAX, NS - Saint Mary's defender Abigal MacKenzie scored the game-winning goal with 1:18 remaining in overtime, as the Huskies defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 2-1 in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Saturday night.

Saturday night's win also secured the Huskies victory of the annual Lobster Trap Cup, presented by Clearwater Seafoods. Combined with the Huskies men's hockey 7-5 win on Jan. 3, the Huskies outscored the Tigers 9-6 over the weekend to secure the Lobster Trap Cup trophy.

The Huskies outshot the Tigers 7-4 through the opening period, but Saint Mary's goaltender Sophie Scully (Ottawa, ON) and Dalhousie counterpart Grace Beer were solid, denying all chances faced as the teams went into intermission deadlocked at 0-0.

Dalhousie broke through first, several minutes into the second period. While on the powerplay, defender Regan Duffy (Burlington, ON) fired a shot on goal that deflected off of several bodies and past Scully to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

With under a minute remaining in the second period, the Huskies were on a powerplay and able to equalize, as the initial shot from defender Anna Barrington (St. John's, NL) was stopped, but forward Jillian Duggan (Halifax, NS) jumped on the rebound to tie the game at 1-1, 19:23 into the second period.

The Huskies outshot the Tigers 17-8 in the period, as the two teams went into intermission tied 1-1.

Once again, the Huskies threatened to score a go-ahead goal all several times throughout the third period, out-chancing the Tigers 16-6, but both Grace Beer and Sophie Scully continued their outstanding play in goal, and the two teams headed into overtime tied 1-1.

The spectacular goaltending continued for nearly four minutes of overtime, with both Scully and Beer making tremendous saves.

But with 1:18 remaining in OT, Huskies leading scorer Abigail MacKenzie won it. After a face-off in the Tigers zone, forward Keyara Nelson dug the puck out of the corner onto the stick of MacKenzie, who walked in on goal and fired a wicked wrist shot from the hashmark that beat Beer high to win the game, 2-1 in overtime.

The Huskies third straight win improves their record to 12-9-0-3 on the season, good for fifth place in the AUS standings. Saint Mary's will be back on home ice on Friday, Feb. 6, hosting the Moncton Aigles Bleues at 7 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre. GET TICKETS
