The Saint Mary's Huskies women's soccer team completed a successful road trip by earning three points in a 3-2 win over the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville, NB on Sunday.

After a hard-fought 0-0 draw vs. the UPEI Panthers on Saturday, the Huskies didn't have to wait long to find their first goal on Sunday. Just over five minutes into the action, Huskies midfielder Anelise Karakostas (Victoria, BC) picked up a loose ball, took two dribbles around a Mounties defender and lobbed a shot from 26 yards out, which drifted over Mounties keeper Sophie Austin (Kanata, ON) into the top left corner of the net to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies offence continued to pressure, and in the 28th minute, Karakostas found forward Allie Martin (Halifax, NS) streaking down the left side of the pitch. With Martin a step ahead, the Mounties defender fouled her in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Martin made no mistake from the spot, beating Austin with a powerful shot to the right of the goal to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

Moments before the first half concluded, the Mounties cut the Huskies lead in half when midfielder Kenadie Wagg (Halifax, NS) fired a shot past Huskies goalkeeper Kaitlyn Alley (Milton, ON) to make it a 2-1 Huskies lead at the half.

Both teams exchanged opportunities over the first two minutes of the second half until a scramble off of a Mounties corner kick saw the ball end up in the back of the Huskies goal. The 64th minute equalizer was credited to Megan LaHay (Oshawa, ON).

With the game tied, play tightened up as neither team wanted to give up the go-ahead goal. In the 74th minute, Huskies first year midfielder Fiona Davidson (Hatchet Lake, NS), deflected the ball to forward Virginia Boone (Halifax, NS). Boone quickly headed towards the right corner, and sent a long shot towards goal, which drifted under the crossbar into the top left corner for an unexpected goal that gave the Huskies a 3-2 lead.

Over the final 15 minutes, the Mounties weren't able to piece together extended possession. The Huskies had several more chances to add on to their lead, but Austin shut the door, and the Huskies held on to a 3-2 victory.

Huskies midfielder Anelise Karakostas was named Subway Player of the Game.

Alley was credited with two saves in the Huskies win, while Austin made six saves for the Mounties.

The win improved the Huskies record to 2-1-1 on the campaign. After securing four points on this weekend's road trip, Saint Mary's return to Halifax to take on the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Huskies Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Mounties loss dropped their record to 0-3-1. They'll next be in action on Friday, Sept. 23 as they host the Acadia Axewomen in Sackville, NB, with kick-off scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
