Karakostas scores late equalizer to secure 2-2 draw against REDS

FREDERICTON, N.B.

Saint Mary's Huskies fourth year midfielder Anelise Karakostas (Victoria, BC) scored a late equalizer to secure a 2-2 draw with the UNB REDS on Saturday afternoon at UNB's BMO Centre.

The visiting Huskies were first on the scoreboard, scoring in the 9th minute, when first year midfielder Julia Pasma (Georgetown, ON) fired a high shot from 16 yards out that beat REDS keeper Brynn Nash (Saskatoon, SK).

The hosts rallied just over seven minutes later, when veteran midfielder Jesse Bellamy (St. Catharines, ON) intercepted a pass in front of the Huskies net, drew Saint Mary's goalkeeper Grace Morrison (Halifax, NS) to one side and fed a pass to Lauwerijssen who had an easy tap-in goal.

Lauwerijssen struck again in the 38th minute, heading home a goal following a UNB free kick deep in the Huskies' zone.

The REDS took that 2-1 lead to the half-time break.

The Huskies had several opportunities to equalize in the second half, but were stopped by the REDS defence.

In the 81st minute, defender Molly McLeod (Kamloops, BC), played a nice pass to the corner for forward Allie Martin (Halifax, NS). Martin quickly turned back and fired a right footed cross which found the head of a wide-open Karakostas, who directed it past Nash to tie the match at 2-2.

Karakostas' third goal of the season tied her for fourth place in the AUS scoring race.

There were several more scoring opportunities in the waning moments of the match, including a dangerous free kick for the REDS, but Morrison punched it away to secure the Huskies point.

Morrison was credited with three saves, while Nash recorded six saves for the REDS.

The Huskies (2-1-2) will continue their weekend road swing on Sunday, visiting l'Universitè de Moncton for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off.

The REDS (1-2-1) will travel to Charlottetown on Sunday to face the UPEI Panthers. That game is also scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
