REDS defeat Huskies 3-0 in Fredericton

FREDERICTON, NB - The UNB REDS beat the Saint Mary's Huskies 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action at UNB's BMO Centre.

The REDS got goals from three different players on route to their fourth consecutive win.

The home team wasted little time in opening the scoring.

Off a great run, Heidi Lauwerijssen (Kensignton, PE) drove a ball onto the Huskies net that keeper Katie Alley (Milton, ON) dove to stop, but the rebound was quickly corralled by Aurora Hughes-Goyette (Garibaldi Highlands, BC) who fired it past a helpless Alley giving the REDS a 1-0 lead.

With time winding down in the opening half, Carolina Gzesniak (Oshawa, ON) lofted a ball into the Huskies box that first-year RED Evana Eyubeh (Mississauga, ON) managed to get a head on, but directed if off the crossbar and the two teams went to the half-time break with UNB leading 1-0.

UNB doubled their lead in the 69th minute when Jillian Curtis (Corpus Christi, TX) fed a ball to Sophia Maillet (Fredericton, NB) in the box and Maillet hammered a left-footed strike past Alley.

Lauwerijssen added a goal in extra time to make the final 3-0.

With the win, the REDS are now 4-1-0 (W-L-T) and sit second in the AUS standings while the Huskies are now 2-3-1 and tied for fourth.
