Huskies upend UNB 3-1 in women’s volleyball

(HALIFAX, N.S.)—The Saint Mary's Huskies upended the UNB Reds 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 26-24, 27-25) on Friday night in Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball action from the Homburg Centre.

The Huskies picked up their first win of the season and ended UNB's three-game winning streak in the process.

UNB won the first set 25-18 as both teams traded points in the set, with UNB using a five-point run to take a 23-17 lead. A 2-1 run ended the set 25-18 for the Varsity Reds.

Saint Mary's held a 12-8 kill advantage in the second set and used a 10-2 run midway thru to cruise to the 25-17 second set win.

The Huskies led early on in the third 9-5 as the Reds battled back. A four-point run saw UNB tie up the set 9-9 and neither team led more than two points thru out the rest of the set. Down a point 24-23, SMU closed out the set on a three-point run for the 26-24 set win.

The fourth set saw an early 7-3 UNB lead turn into a 16-11 lead midway thru the set. SMU clawed back on a 6-1 run and knotted up the score 17-17. See-sawing points back and forth down the stretch had the Huskies up 23-22. SMU went on a 4-3 run for the 27-25 set win and the match 3-1.

UNB's Victoria Eadle (Gallagher Ridge, NB) paced all hitters with 17 kills and 20.0 total points in the loss, while Megan Kuciak (Ottawa, ON) had 16 kills as the Varsity Reds drop to 3-1 in conference play.

Anna Watt (Calgary, AB) led Saint Mary's with 12 kills in the win and Jamie Rourke (Mission, BC) had nine kills and was named Subway player of the game.

UNB continues their road-trip November 10th versus the U Sports No. 5-ranked Dal Tigers while Saint Mary's travels to Moncton on Sunday.
