Huskies get their sixth straight win

(Halifax, NS) The red-hot Saint Mary's Huskies women's volleyball team defeated the UdeM Aigles Bleus in straight sets to win their sixth straight game.

Saint Mary's won the first set by a score of 25-20. It was a fairly close at the start with the score being 17-16 for the Huskies.

Then Smu scored five straight points to stretch their lead to 22-16. They got two kills by Lindsay Donovan (London ON) and Bethany Smith (Moncton NB) along with getting three points from errors by UdeM. That was an important run because the rest of the set was fairly even but SMU ended up winning because of that six-point cushion.

The second set was similar. Again, the set was close at 16-14 for UdeM.  Smu took over after that and went on back-to-back five point and four point runs to give them a 24-19 lead. Four of those points were caused by UdeM errors so Moncton called a timeout to regroup.

UdeM responded with four straight points to get the score to 24-23. Unfortunately for them, Pascale Doiron's (Dieppe NB) serve went out of bounds and gave Smu the set point.

Another big offensive surge lead the Huskies to victory in the third set. The Huskies were leading 15-12 and then scored nine points to UdeM's one to make the score 23-12. Donovan got four kills on that run.

Smu won the set 26-16 and won the game in straight sets.

Donovan led the way offensively for the Huskies with 12 points. Bethany Smith, Jaime Rourke (Mission BC) and Olivia Bell (Lahave NS) all provided solid secondary scoring.

Smith was named Subway Player of the Game. She had 8.5 points.

On UdeM's side, Doiron lead the way with nine points while Eliza Druart (Gallagher Ridge NB) and Ivana Urquhart-Mladineo (Saint-Jean NB) both had 7.5 points.

The Huskies have one regulation game left. That will be on Friday, February 15, at home against Acadia.
