Huskies sweep Seahawks 3-0 in weekend series

(HALIFAX, N.S.)—Despite playing their third straight match in three days, the Saint Mary's Huskies swept the Memorial University Sea-Hawks, 25-14, 25-15, 25-20, on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball action from the Homburg Centre.

The Huskies (4-1) hit .190 as a team and held Memorial (0-3) to a -.039 rate.
 
Second-year middle Olivia Bell (La Have, NS) led all players with eight kills on .333 hitting and seven digs. Fourth year left side Anna Watt (Calgary, AB) added six kills on .190 hitting and four service aces.
 
Libero second-year Renee Cleveland (Saint-Martin, NS) racked up 18 digs in the three sets.

 

Second year middle Mariama Syll (Charters Settlement, NB) led SMU with three blocks.

Memorial led 2-0 early in the first set before dropping five straight points and trailed 5-2. SMU scored 20 of the next 32 points, closing out the set 25-14.

 

Set number two saw SMU carry leads of 10-5, 15-10 and 20-12 before using a 5-3 run ending the set 25-15.

 

A 6-0 run early in the third set saw the Seahawks led 9-5 when SMU's 10-6 run had the Huskies regaining the lead 16-15 midway. A 5-1 run by Memorial pushed the Seahawks ahead at 20-17. A final 8-0 run by SMU closed out the third set 25-20 as Saint Mary's won in straight sets.

 
Memorial University was led by Alyssa Waterford's (Corner Brook, NL) five kills, while junior Catherine Smith (Mount Pearl, NL) added four kills and one block.
 
Both teams return to action next weekend when Memorial hosts Moncton November 8-10 while Saint Mary's hits the road November 8th at 6 p.m. versus cross-town rival Dalhousie.

 

The Huskies finish up their fall season with a three game, two-province road trip, November 15-18 versus Acadia, Moncton and UNB.
