Tigers top Huskies 3-0 in volleyball action

HALIFAX, N.S. – The Saint Mary's Huskies fell to the U SPORTS No. 2 ranked Dal Tigers on Friday night in Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball action from the Homburg Centre Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Huskies (7-5) are on the season, and the Tigers are 12-0 in conference play.

How it Happened

Dalhousie jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first set before the Huskies fought back to get within two, 15-13, midway thru the opening set. The Huskies could not catch Dalhousie and the Tigers took the first set 25-17.

The second set began with even, back and forth play. After being down 15-10, Saint Mary's scored three straight points to pull with in two, 15-13. The Huskies battled back to 18-17 late in the set. The Tigers would go on to win the second set 25-19 and take a 2-0 lead.

SMU jumped out to an early 5-3 lead in set three before Dalhousie battled back to tie the game at 6-6. Tied at the midway mark of the set (11-11), DAL scored five straight points to lead 16-11.

The Huskies forced two quick Tiger errors and trailed 16-13. SMU used a 5-1 run and lead 18-17 late in the set. The Tigers would push back and ultimately take a tightly contested third set 25-23, and the match 3-0.

Sophomore Olivia Bell (La Have, NS) led the Huskies with a team-high nine kills and seven digs, hitting .208 on the night and received the player of the game for SMU. Rookie Megan Bruhm (Hubley, NS) tallied eight kills and two digs for SMU, while teammate junior Bethany Smith (Moncton, NB) recorded five kills.

Sarah Dawe (Mount Pearl, NL) paced Dalhousie with nine kills and 12 digs in the win. Julie Moore (Halifax, NS) added eight kills and Victoria Turcot (Halifax, NS) had seven for the Tigers.

Up Next

The Huskies head to Wolfville on Saturday to take on the Axewomen at 7 p.m. while the Tigers play host to UNB, Sunday at 2 p.m.
