Axewomen balanced attack leads them past Huskies in first game of Memorial Tournament

The Acadia Axe-Women (7-0) opened this weekend's Atlantic University Sport Volleyball tournament with a commanding victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies (3-3) at Memorial University in St. John's, NL.

Despite every set being hotly contested, the Axewomen were able to come away with the 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-23) victory on Friday afternoon at the MUN Fieldhouse.

Both teams went back-and-forth in the opening two sets, however, in each instance the Axe-Women were able to pull away in the latter half, capturing the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-19.

In the 3rd and final set the Axewomen seemed to be well on their way to putting the game away, capturing a commanding 19-10 lead before the Huskies started to surge back. The Huskies would bring the set to 23-22, before eventually falling on a beautiful attack by Jenna Lake to conclude the match.

Axewomen outside hitter Taylor Witty posted a game-high 10 kills and was also active on the defensive end, recording 6 digs. Setter Charlotte Dean was also outstanding in this match, consistently putting her team in positions to succeed, gathering 29 assists for the match.

Huskies outside hitter Olivia Bell (Lahave, NS) was the main catalyst for the Huskies attack, producing a team-high 9 kills and an impressive 5 digs. Opposite side hitter Megan Bruhm (Hubley, NS) was also pivotal for the Huskies, recording 4 kills and a team-high 12 digs.

Acadia hits the court once again on Saturday at 1:30 PM AST against the Dalhousie Tigers, while the Huskies are set to face the UNB Reds at 3:30 PM AST.
