Huskies put together complete game, defeat REDS in straight sets

The Saint Mary's Huskies (4-3) were able to come away victorious against the UNB REDS (4-4) by a final score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-23) at the MUN Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies were able to jump out to an early lead in the opening set, taking an early 11-5 lead on the REDS, eventually holding on to take the opening set 25-19.

However, the REDS would respond early on in the 2nd set, taking control an early 4-0 lead and trying their very best to hold on. Despite their best efforts, the Huskies, thanks to a stretch of 7 consecutive points would eventually win the set 25-17.

The REDS were able to jump out to another lead in the crucial 3rd set, and they jumped out to a demanding 14-9 lead, but weren't able to hold on, eventually dropping the set 25-23.

Huskies outside hitter Sydney Fader (Dartmouth, NS) was named Subway Player of the Game with four kills, eight digs and two service aces.

Saint Mary's outside hitter Olivia Bell (Lahave, NS) was dominant throughout the entire match, recording a game-high 15 kills, while also contributing on the defensive side, adding 7 digs. Huskies setter Taylor Lougheed (Calgary, AB) kept the opposing Reds on their toes with her creativity, dishing out a game-high 24 assists.

REDS outside hitter Heather Benko was solid on the attack, creating the most problems for the Huskies defence. Benko ended the game with a team-high 9 kills and was the main catalyst for the REDS offence. Setter Paige Lehto did her very best to keep her team alive, mustering an impressive 19 assists to her teammates.

The Huskies win improves their record to 4-3 on the campaign. They'll return to the court on Sunday for their final game of the tournament, taking on the host Memorial Sea-Hawks at 2:30 p.m. AST.
