(Fredericton, NB)- With ideal running conditions on Saturday, October 15th, the Cross Country Huskies were able to pull off several personal best performances. The weekend meet, co-hosted by UNB and STU, featured the Cross Country teams of the AUS taking on the teams from the RESQ conference. The added competition allowed many of the Huskies to rise to the challenge.
On the women's side, Samantha Fader, Paige Roszak, and Jessica Hinkka all ran their fastest university 6k race to date for the Huskies. Samantha Fader led the charge with a 23:56.11, cracking the 24minute mark for the first time. Paige Roszak was second for Saint Mary's in a time of 26:09.93, and Jessica Hinkka passed four other competitors in the last stretch of the race to finish in 27:25.25. The overall winner of the women's 6k race was Melanie Myrand of McGill University, with Sarah Myatt of Dalhousie finishing as the top AUS competitor. Saint Mary's Alumnus Ashley Ryer was second in the women's race. In the team standings, McGill University was first with Dalhousie University coming second to take the tope AUS team position.
In the men's 8k race, Jonathan Peverill, Christopher Lee, Cameron Taylor, Stephen Goodyear, and Andrew Herold all recorded personal bests. Ian MacDonald, still recovering from injuries, recorded a season's best performance over 8k. Jonathan Peverill was first across the line for the Huskies in 27:07.91. Christopher Lee was second for Saint Mary's with a time of 28:45.58, cracking both the 30minute and 29minute marks for the first time. Cameron Taylor was third for the team in 29:43.91. In 5th and 6th place for the Huskies respectively, Stephen Goodyear ran a 30:30.81, and Andrew Herold ran a 31:44.89. Yves Sikubwabo of Laval University won the men's race, with Scott Donald of St. F.X. finishing third to be the top AUS finisher. In the team standings, Laval took the title while St. F.X came second to be the top AUS team. The Cross Country Men's Huskies were 12th out of the 15 teams, and 5th out of the AUS schools.
The next stop for the Huskies is the AUS Cross Country championships in two weeks' time, where they will make their push for the CIS National championships. The St. F.X. X-men and X-women will host the AUS championships in Antigonish on Saturday, October 29th. The women race at 12noon and the men race at 12:45 pm.
