AUS Cross Country Championships

(Antigonish, NS)- Despite the rainy conditions and slippery course on Saturday, October 29th, the Cross Country Huskies were able to pull off some season best times at the AUS Championships. The weekend race, hosted by St. F.X. University, saw Saint Mary's cap off a solid season. Both individually and as a team, the Huskies saved their best races for last.

In the Women's 6k race, Samantha Fader was first across the line for the Huskies in 24:03.00, finishing just 3 seconds back of the CIS standard. Samantha was 17th overall in the race. Paige Roszak was second for the Huskies in 25:01.00, and Georgina Beeden was third for Saint Mary's in 27:10.00. Leila Zaki, Jessica Hinkka, Krystal Frenette, and Inga Rademaker also had strong performances despite the weather. The young team of primarily rookies and second years showed promise with their 7th place finish out of the 8 AUS teams. The Cross Country Women's Huskies were only 2 points behind 6th Place UNB. Colleen Wilson of Dalhousie University won the women's 6k race, and the Dalhousie Tigers took home the Women's team banner.

On the Men's side, Jonathan Peverill was first to finish for the Huskies in a time of 34:33.00. Jonathan was 17th overall in the Men's 10k race. Second for the Huskies was Christopher Lee in 36:52.00, and Drew LeFrank was third for Saint Mary's in 37:42.00. Stephan Goodyear, Ian MacDonald, Cameron Taylor and Andrew Herold all finished off their season's confidently in the slick conditions. The Cross Country Men's Huskies finished 6th out of the 7 AUS teams present at the meet (St. Thomas University did not field a full team). Cal DeWolfe of St.F.X. won the Men's 10k race, and the St.F.X. X-men captured the Men's team banner on home turf. 

Cameron Taylor was named male AUS Student - Athlete Community Service Award winner.  Congratulations Cameron!

The CIS Cross Country Championships will be held on November 12th in Quebec City, where Laval will host Canada's best varsity Cross Country runners on the Plains of Abraham. All the best to the athletes representing the AUS at these Championships, and Congratulations to the Cross Country Huskies on a solid 2016 season!
