Andrew Peverill finishes 2nd in UPEI Meet

(Charlottetown, PE) On a hot mid-September Saturday, the AUS Cross Country season kicked off with the first meet, hosted by UPEI in Victoria Park, Charlottetown.  The heat made for tough races and the Huskies were able to compete well despite the conditions. Three women and men represented the Huskies.

In the first race of the day, the women took on the 5km course. A technical, sharp-turning course created the need for a quick start to avoid getting boxed in. First year Bhreagh Burkewas able to get out to a quick start and battle most of the race alongside the other top rookies in the conference. Burke finished in 23rdposition with a time of 20:45. Look for Burke to make a push come the AUS Championships to attempt to claim AUS Female Rookie of the Year. Third year Paige Roszak, put in a solid effort to finish 36thin a time of 21:57. First year athlete Emma Parsons rounded out the three female Huskies racing in 55thplace, clocking a 24:15.

In the men's 6 Km race, second year Andrew Peverillraced off the line quickly and put himself in a strong position with the lead pack. The race started slow and tactical with the men jostling for position, but Peverill broke away late in the race with Angus Rawling and Alex Neuffer of St.FX. In a tight finish, Peverill would place 2ndin a time of 20:18. Ryan Fraccaro (2ndyear) was racing for the first time, since last cross country season, after recovering from off-season surgery. Fraccaro finished in 24thcrossing the line in 22:28. Fifth year Ian MacDonaldrounded out the three male Huskies competing, finishing in 27thposition with a time of 22:46.

Next up on the AUS schedule is the StFX Invitational on Saturday, September 22. The Huskies who sat out UPEI will look to race at StFX and represent the maroon and white. Well done SMU!
