Andrew Peverill places 1st in men's 8K

Antigonish, NS – Over 115 runners took to the trails on the campus of St. Francis Xavier University Saturday afternoon at the StFX Cross Country Invitational in the first competitive meet of the AUS season.

The SMU/DAL Invitational, originally scheduled for September 8th was cancelled due to the effects of Hurricane Dorian in Halifax.

 

On the men's side, 3rd year athlete Andrew Peverill set the tone for the season capturing the win in a time of 25:07 over the 8km distance. Following Peverill in for the Huskies was Joe Stewart in 32nd (27:21), Ryan Fraccaro in 35th (27:34), Kyle Caie in 38th (28:03), and Brandon Martin and Nick Burgers-Lamontagne, each donning the maroon and white for the first time, placing 55th (30:09) and 64th (32:43) respectively. The men's team placed 5th with a score of 122 points, only 3 points behind Memorial in 4th. Dalhousie placed 1st with a score of 38 points.

In the women's 6km race, 1st year athlete Alex Whynacht was the top SMU athlete across the line in 38th with a time of 27:49, closely followed by teammate Sarah Polak in 39th (28:03). Also racing for the Huskies, for the first time, was Gael Cameron placing 43rd (28:54). Rounding out the squad was Lauren Doucet in 46th (29:47). Jane Hergett of the St.FX X-Women was the overall winner, leading her team to a 1st place finish with a score of 36 points.

Up next for the Huskies is the Acadia Invitational on Saturday, October 5th.
