Huskies Late Surge Results in a 1-1 Draw

Halifax, N.S.– The Saint Mary's University Huskies were back on the pitch Friday night under the backdrop of a beautiful fall evening as they played host to the visiting Acadia Axewomen in AUS Soccer action.

From the opening whistle the Axewomen took the play to the Huskies with a few opportunities early; only to be thwarted by Saint Mary's Keeper Sonika Nandha (Surrey BC / Science).

Acadia finally put one by Nandha on a shot just out of reach in the 13th minute by Meghan Johnston putting the visitors up 1-0.

The Axewomen continued to press through the rest of the half, outshooting the Huskies 12-2 and taking the one goal lead into halftime.

The second half saw some spark from the Huskies as they battled to pull even but both Nandha and Acadia keeper Milena Ramirez respectively keep both squads off the board.

In the dying minutes of the half the Huskies continued to pressure looking for their equalizer.  In the 89th minute a corner by Madlyn Blinn (Sackville NS / Science) saw a pinball like effect in front of the Acadia goal with numerous players looking to score and clear the ball all at the same time culminating in miss kick by a defender finding the back of the net.

As injury time played out the end result was an entertaining 1-1 draw.

AUS Subway player of the Game was the Huskies Sonika Nandha who was stellar in net on the evening making 15 saves in the contest.

Up next for the Huskies (0-4-3) will be the SFX X-Women for a Thanksgiving Thursday night soccer match on October 7 at Huskies Stadium.

The Axewomen (3-1-2) play host to the same SFX squad on Sunday October 3.
