Huskies fall to X-Women 1-0 in final minutes

Halifax NS -On a beautiful fall evening, the St. Francis Xavier X-Women rode into Halifax to face off against the SMU Huskies for their second meeting on the season, with Head Coach Marisa Colzie's squad chasing their first victory on the season. The last time the Huskies played the X-Women, the game ended in a 5 – 1 win for the X-Women, in Antigonish.

The game was a teeter-totter of a battle, with each team trading shots back and forth as the game wore on, with several cross bars being hit by either side. Second year Huskies Goalkeeper Soninkha Nandha (Surrey, BC / Science) had her second start of the season, after an impressive showing in the last match against the 3rd place Acadia Axewomen, which ended in a 1 – 1 draw. Nandha, once again, was up to her feline like moves, saving a whopping 8 of 9 shots sent her way.

Up front, the X-Women were led by fourth year Forward Amanda Smith. The X-women's offense seemed to all funnel through Smith, who tallied 6 shots, and assisted on the loan goal of the game, scored by first year true freshman, Caitlin Crichton.  Crichton scored off a beautiful pass from Smith in the 85th minute, which stole the win for the X-Women, and spoiled the Thanksgiving week match for the Huskies.

After 90 minutes of end-to-end action, with 11 shots traded between the teams, the match ended in 1-0 victory for the X-Women. X-Women offensive specialist, Amanda Smith earned Subway player of the game honors for her strong play.

The X-Women (6-2-0) will have the better part of a week's rest before playing host to the 3rd place Acadia Axewomen at Home in Antigonish on Saturday, October 16th.

Saint Mary's (0-5-3) travel to the Picture Province to play the UNB Reds on Friday, October 15th in the Fredericton, before playing their second game of the weekend against U de M in the Hub City.
