Demale named AUS MVP; Corbett, MacLean named to All-Rookie team

Saint Mary's Huskies forward Shae Demale (Red Deer, AB), has been named the 2021-22 AUS Women's Hockey MVP.

A third-year forward, Demale played in all 21 of the Huskies games, leading the AUS in scoring with 25 points, and ranking top 5 in goals (13), assists (12), powerplay goals (4) and shots (86).

Demale is the seventh player from Saint Mary's to win the conference MVP award. Former Huskies winners include Courtney Schriver (2005-06) and Lindsay Taylor (2003-04, 2004-05). With this win, she becomes the AUS nominee for the Brodrick Trophy as U SPORTS player of the year. The most recent AUS student-athlete to be named the national player of the year was STFX's Tyra Meropoulis in 2019-20.

"I'm beyond proud of Shae, she deserves this and it's a testament to the work she puts in everyday," says Huskies head coach Chris Larade. "She comes to the rink and is an absolute pro about how she goes about not only making herself better, but raising the bar for her teammates."

Demale was also named AUS First Team All-Star, which marks her second First Team selection, and third all-star selection (2019-20 First Team, 2018-19 Second Team). For her career, Demale has scored 75 points (38 goals, 37 assists) in 77 regular season games.

CORBETT, MACLEAN NAMED TO ALL-ROOKIE TEAM

First-year Huskies Maddy Corbett and Kara MacLean were selected to the AUS All-Rookie team.

In 21 games played, Maddy Corbett (Sydney, NS) led all Huskies defencemen in scoring with 11 points and 4 goals (tied with Caleigh Meraw).

"Maddy had a fire start and never looked back, and it's great to see her get rewarded as a first year player," said Coach Larade. "She's a great person and teammate, her hands and shot are as good as any in the conference, and she's going to be one of the top defence in this league for a while."

In 20 games played, Kara MacLean (Antigonish, NS) was tied for second on the Huskies with 17 points, which also tied her for second among all first-year players. She also tied for the league lead in game winning goals with 5.

"Kara is a great person first and foremost, and a great student with a lot of love for the game," said Coach Larade. "She's a gifted offensive player and she's so coachable. She's been phenomenal in terms of getting better every game on both sides of the puck, which has led to more offensive opportunities."

The #2 seed Huskies will begin their playoff run on Wednesday night, as they take on the #7 seed Dalhousie Tigers at 7 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre.
