Huskies women's basketball announces commitment of two local transfers

Saint Mary's University women's basketball coach Scott Munro is pleased to announce the commitment of a pair of local transfers that will be joining the Huskies.

Sophia Widmeyer

Sophia Widmeyer, a 6'0" shooting guard out of Dartmouth, N.S be joining the Huskies for the 2022-23 season, after spending the past four years with a pair of NCAA Division 1 teams.

"We are ecstatic to have Sophia join our team," says Huskies head coach Scott Munro. "She will bring lots of experience to our group. Sophia has played at a high level with and against good competition and will be counted on to help bring this to our group through her leadership and well-rounded game."

Widmeyer spent the 2021-22 season with the University of New Hampshire Wildcats, where she appeared in 27 of the team's 28 games, starting eight, and averaged 5.7 points and three rebounds per game. Widmeyer led the team in three pointers made (20), and attempted (77). On February 14, 2022, Widmeyer scored a career high 15 points on 6-8 shooting, leading her team to a 61-59 comeback win over Hartford.   

From 2018-21, Widmeyer appeared in 55 games for the Providence College Friars, averaging 1.8 point and 1.2 rebounds per game. On March 6, 2021, Widmeyer scored nine points in the Big East Tournament Quarterfinal vs. Marquette. On Feb. 2, 2020, Widmeyer scored a career high 10 points against nationally ranked DePaul.

"I am excited to be back in Nova Scotia, in my hometown with my grandparents, sister, brother, mom, and dad," says Widmeyer. "Saint Mary's is one talented team and I am very thankful to play with these girls and be coached by these coaches. This year is going to be a good one!"

Widmeyer will reunite with Coach Munro, who coached her on the U17 Nova Scotia Provincial Team. She attended high school at Marianapolis Preparatory School in Connecticut where she was named a two-time NEPSAC All-Star, and to the All-Connecticut Second Team.

An excellent student, Widmeyer was named to the Big East All-Academic Team twice, and was a member of the Alpha Chi Sigma Scholar-Athlete Society. She will be studying her Masters in Industrial-Organizational Psychology at Saint Mary's.

 

Chloe Wilson

Chloe Wilson, a 5'11" forward out of Dartmouth, N.S will be transferring to Saint Mary's after spending the last three seasons with the Dalhousie Tigers.

"We are excited to have Chloe join our program," said Huskies head coach Scott Munro. "Chloe will be a great addition who will bring experience and a strong, varied skill set to our team. We look forward to Chloe joining our group."

During the 2021-22 season, Wilson appeared in 10 games with the Tigers, starting five. She finished second on the Tigers in rebounds per game (6.5), and fourth in minutes per game (26.3), and points per game (8.9). On Nov. 17, 2021, Wilson scored a season high 19 points and added nine rebounds in a 77-70 loss to the Huskies.

In the 2019-20 season, Wilson was named to the AUS All-Rookie Team. That season, she played in 19 of the Tigers 20 regular season games, making 15 starts, and led the Tigers in total and average scoring (255 points, 13.4 points per game), rebounding (138 rebounds, 7.3 rebounds per game), blocked shots (9 blocks, 0.5 blocks per game), and led the team in field goals (88) and free-throws made (74). She scored 15+ points on eight occasions, including a career high 22 points in a Nov. 22, 2019 loss to Acadia.

"I'm very excited to continue my basketball career with the Huskies," says Wilson. "I'm looking forward to being challenged and further developed under Coach Munro and it is going to be so much fun playing alongside a few familiar faces. I can't wait to see what this amazing opportunity brings."

During her senior season of high school, Wilson captained the Dartmouth High School varsity basketball team to a perfect 30-0 record, winning both the Capital Region and NSSAF Provincial Championships.

A long-time member of the Basketball Nova Scotia provincial team, Wilson has represented her province at national tournaments on three occasions.

Wilson will be studying a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at Saint Mary's.
