Huskies hockey players win gold at 2023 FISU Winter Games

Four Saint Mary's hockey players - Shae Demale of the Huskies Women's team and Andrew CoxheadJustin MacPherson and Matt Welsh of the Huskies Men's team - can now call themselves world champions after winning gold medals at the 2023 FISU Winter Games in Lake Placid, NY.

Forward Shae Demale (Red Deer, AB) recorded an assist in Canada's 5-0 win over Japan in the gold medal game. Demale was one of Canada's standout performers throughout the tournament, finishing second on the team in both goals (five) and points (10), and added five assists, 19 shots on goal, and a +11 plus/minus.

The Canadian U SPORTS all-stars went a perfect 7-0 at the tourney, outscoring opponents by a lopsided 42-3 margin.

Forward Andrew Coxhead (Bedford, NS) had two assists in Canada's 7-2 win over USA in the gold medal game. Coxhead appeared in all seven games for Canada, recording six points (two goals, four assists) and adding 18 shots on goal and a +8 plus/minus.

Defenceman Justin MacPherson (East Gwillimbury, ON) appeared in all seven games for Canada. He recorded three assists, 22 shots on goal, and posted a plus/minus of +10, tied for the team lead.

Goaltender Matt Welsh (Halifax, NS) made 18 saves in Canada's 8-2 win over Japan on Jan. 15, his lone appearance of the group stage.

The Canadian U SPORTS all-stars went a perfect 7-0 at the tourney, outscoring opponents by a lopsided 48-8 margin.
