Tigers win soccer battle at Wanderers Grounds

(Halifax, NS) – In the 2019-20 installment of the Halifax Derby, the Dalhousie Tigers hosted the Saint Mary's Huskies at the historic Wanderers Ground in downtown Halifax. After a scoreless first half, the Tigers were able to secure a 2-1 victory in the second.

The Huskies got the first scoring chance of the match after a Tigers defender misjudged a bounce that went over his head for Tyler Dorey (Cole Harbour, NS) to take a swing at goal, but Ben Grondin (Calgary, AB) was able to step up to punch the ball away for a tough save.

Keeping up the attacking pressure, a nice chip caught the back-line of the Tigers off guard looking for an offside, but it gave Dorey another open look at the goal, this time on a tough angle however, as Grondin was able to cut down the angle and knock it away.

After a quiet first 45, the teams went into the break at a scoreless draw.

The Tigers opened the second half with some ferocity, holding attacking pressure in the Huskies end, and they were finally able to break through.

On a great chip ball into the box from Nyle MacLeod (Ottawa, ON) took a bounce before Tigers captain Freddy Bekkers (Halifax, NS) was able to meet it with a low header into the near corner to open the scoring.

The Tigers were able to follow up that goal with another quick one just a few minutes later when Enrico Rodriguez (Halifax, NS) made a great run into the box and pull back from the left foot to the right to force the Huskies keeper to commit before Rodriguez sent his strike home toward the far post for a 2-0 lead.

The Huskies were able to answer with a goal of their own in the 84th minute when a corner took multiple deflections in front of the Tigers net before Fabian Perez (Bogota, Colombia) was able to hammer it home to bring the Huskies within one with time running out.

Pressuring late for the equalizer, the Huskies pushed everyone up the field, but were the Tigers were able to clear it away as the final whistle blew and the Tigers came away with a 2-1 win.

For scoring the game-winning goal, the Tigers Enrico Rodriguez was named the Subway Player of the Game.

The Tigers will look to keep their momentum going on Wednesday when they host Acadia, while the Huskies will also take on Acadia next Friday.
