Huskies remain undefeated in exhibition play, win Dalhousie's Savoy Memorial Tournament

The Saint Mary's Huskies Women's Basketball team has started the preseason with a perfect 6-0 record, winning this weekend's Dr. Carolyn Savoy Memorial Women's Basketball Tournament, hosted by the Dalhousie Tigers in Halifax, NS.

On Friday, the Huskies used a dominant 27-2 first quarter to defeat the Laurentian Voyageurs 78-40. Forward Lucina Beaumont (Fredericton, NB) led the way with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while guards Courtney Donaldson (Kelowna, BC) and Aliyah Fraser (New Glasgow, NS) came off the bench to chip in 16 and 11 points respectively.

On Saturday afternoon, the Huskies defeated the McMaster Marauders 105-75. Aliyah Fraser put on a shooting clinic, dropping 23 points, including 6-9 three-pointers, in just 21 minutes of action. In a balanced scoring effort, Courtney Donaldson added 17 points, Chloe Wilson (Dartmouth, NS) scored 16, Lucina Beaumont added 13 points and six rebounds, and Marlo Steenbakkers (Ottawa, ON) contributed 12 points and five rebounds.

On Sunday afternoon, the Huskies defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 77-49. Once again, it was a balanced scoring effort with five Huskies scoring in double figures - Clara Gascoigne (Dartmouth, NS) with 14 points and five rebounds, Courtney Donaldson with 12 points, Chloe Wilson with 10 points and nine rebounds, Katelyn Power (Bayside, NS) with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Lucina Beaumont with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Huskies forward Lucina Beaumont was named Tournament Most Valuable Player, averaging 14 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals over three wins. Guard Courtney Donaldson was named a Tournament All-Star, averaging 15 points, two rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.

The Huskies have now defeated six different U SPORTS opponents by an average margin of 22.7 points per game. They'll head to Ottawa, Ontario next weekend, where they'll take on the Carleton Ravens, Ottawa Gee-Gees, and Laurentian Voyageurs in their final weekend of the preseason.

Saint Mary's will open the 2023-24 Atlantic University Sport Regular Season at home, as they host the Acadia Axewomen in a rematch of last year's AUS Championship Final on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. the Homburg Centre. GET TICKETS
