Panthers top Huskies 6-3 in game one of quarterfinals

(Halifax, NS)  In game one of the AUS Subway Women's Hockey quarterifnals, Jessie Howard (Kingston, ON) had 2 goals, as the UPEI Panthers defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 6-3 Wednesday night at Alumni Arena.

Howard's performance earned her Subway player of the game honours.

The Panthers got the scoring started when Cornelia Geib (Calgary, AB) tallied at 4:04 to make it the score 1-0. The Huskies answered back when captain, Breanna Lanceleve (Middle Sackville, NS) notched a powerplay marker at 9:09 to tie it at 1-1 after the first period.

In the second, Saint Mary's took the lead when Moira Macdonald (Cole Harbour, NS) notched a marker at 5:56 to make it 2-1. The Panthers evened things up when Howard scored on the powerplay at 15:54 to make it 2-2. The Panthers took the lead again when Ferran Brown (Calgary, AB) scored at 17:45 to get it to 3-2.  At 18:56 of the 2nd, the Panthers extended their lead when Howard got her second of the nigh to make it 4-2 at the end of two periods.

The third period saw the Panthers go further ahead when Emma Weatherbie (Charlottetown, PE) got a powerplay tally at 7:36 to get it to 5-2. The Huskies got one back when Caitlyn Manning (Cambridge, ON) scored at 14:26 to cut the lead to 5-3. The Panthers put the game away when Margaret Grimmer (Charlottetown, PE) potted a marker at 16:05 to make it 6-3.

The Huskies outshot the Panthers 29-27. Marie-Soleil Deschen (Ile-Perrot, QC) made 26 saves to get the win in net for the Panthers and Justine McIntosh (East St.Paul, MA) and Rebecca Weagle (Lunenburg, NS) combined to stop 21 shots in net for the Huskies.

Game two of this quarterfinal series goes tomorrow night at 7:00 pm in Charlottetown. If a third game is necessary, it is set for Saturday at 7:00 pm in Alumni Arena.
