Peverill, McMillan named Huskies Athletes of the Week: Feb. 20-26, 2023

Men's track and field athlete Andrew Peverill and women's basketball guard Alaina McMillan have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week of Feb. 20-26, 2023.

Andrew Peverill, a fifth year track & field athlete from Lower Sackville, N.S., is the Huskies male athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 20-26, 2023.

At this weekend's AUS Track & Field Championships in Saint John, N.B., Peverill won a pair of gold medals in the 3000m and 1500m, breaking AUS Championship records and qualifying for U SPORTS Nationals in the process, and added a silver medal in the 4x400 relay.

On Friday, Peverill won the gold medal in the 3000m with a time of 8:12.05, taking more than six seconds off the previous AUS Championship record, set in 2019. Peverill currently sits fifth in the U SPORTS rankings in the 3000m event.

On Saturday, Peverill won the gold medal in the 1500m with a time of 3:46.56, once again breaking the AUS Championship Record. Peverill currently sits third in the U SPORTS rankings in the 1500m event.

Peverill capped off the meet by helping lead the Huskies to a silver medal in the 4x400m relay, with their finishing time of 1:30.09 breaking the Saint Mary's school record.

For his efforts, Peverill was named 2022-23 AUS Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

Peverill will finish his illustrious AUS career by competing in the 1500m and 3000m event at the 2023 U SPORTS Nationals, being held March 9-11 in Saskatoon, SK.

 

Alaina McMillan, a fourth year guard from Brantford, ON, is the Huskies female athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 20-26, 2023.

McMillan was named Subway AUS Championship Most Valuable Player, in leading the Huskies to their first AUS Championship since 2015-16. McMillan averaged 19 points, including shooting 42% from three and 89% from the free-throw line, adding 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists per game.

In Saturday night's 67-60 semifinal win over the UPEI Panthers, McMillan led all scorers with 18 points, including 4/10 from three, and added five rebounds, three steals and an assist, and was named Subway Player of the Game.

In Sunday afternoon's 68-56 final over the Acadia Axewomen, McMillan again led all scroers with 20 points, including 4/9 from three and a perfect 6/6 from the free-throw line, and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Huskies will now represent the AUS at U SPORTS Nationals, being held March 9-12 in Sydney, Cape Breton.
