Peverill, Widmeyer named Huskies Athletes of the Week: Mar. 6-12, 2023

Men's track and field athlete Andrew Peverill and women's basketball guard Sophia Widmeyer have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week of Mar. 6-12, 2023.

Andrew Peverill, a fifth year track & field athlete from Lower Sackville, N.S., is the Huskies male athlete of the week for the week of Mar. 6-12, 2023.

At this weekend's U SPORTS Track & Field Championships in Saskatoon, SK, Peverill won a bronze medal in the 1500m, as well as finishing sixth place in the 3000m.

In the final race of his illustrious career, Saturday's 1500m, Peverill finished in third place with a time of 3:50.98, just 0.72 seconds behind the winner. 

His U SPORTS bronze medal marks the first Saint Mary's National Track & Field medal in 20 years, since Kristen Woodruff's 3000m gold in 2003.

Peverill also competed in the 3000m dash on Friday night, finishing sixth in the country with a time of 8:16.91.

Sophia Widmeyer, a fifth year guard from Dartmouth, NS, is the Huskies female athlete of the week for the week of Mar. 6-12, 2023.

At this weekend's U SPORTS Women's Basketball Final 8 Championships in Sydney, NS, Widmeyer led the Huskies in scoring averaging 11.3 points and 4.3 rebounds over three games played.

In Thursday's 70-68 quarterfinal win over the Calgary Dinos, Widmeyer led all scorers with 16 points, adding two rebounds, and was named Nike Player of the Game.

In Saturday's 65-46 semifinal loss to the eventual champion Carleton Ravens, Widmeyer again led the Huskies with 16 points and eight rebounds and was named Nike Player of the Game.

The Huskies finished fourth in the country after losing the bronze medal game to the Alberta Pandas.
