Gabriel, Steenbakkers named Huskies Athletes of the Week: Jan. 22-28, 2024

Men's basketball guard Marc-Denault Gabriel and women's basketball forward Marlo Steenbakkers have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week ending January 28, 2024.

Marc-Denault Gabriel a third year guard from Montreal, QC is the Huskies male athlete of the week for the week of Jan. 22-28, 2024.

Gabriel helped lead the Huskies to a pair of wins this week, extending their win streak to seven straight and putting them a top the conference with a 9-6 record. Over the pair of games, Gabriel averaged 19 points, 16 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game.

In Wednesday's 72-62 win over STFX, Gabriel led the Huskies with a massive 18 point, 18 rebound double-double, adding three steals and an assist.

In Saturday's 81-73 win over UPEI, Gabriel again led the Huskies with 20 points and 14 rebounds, adding two assists, two blocks and a steal.

For the season, Gabriel leads all of U SPORTS Men's Basketball with 12.1 rebounds per game and has posted double-doubles in nine of his 14 games played. He adds 15.9 points, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals (third in the AUS) in 34.2 minutes per game (third in the AUS). The Huskies improved to 9-6 on the season and will be back on homecourt Friday, Feb. 2 as they host the UNB REDS.

Marlo Steenbakkers a fourth year forward from Ottawa, ON is the Huskies female athlete of the week for the week of Jan. 22-28, 2024.

Steenbakkers helped lead the Huskies to a pair of wins this week, extending their win streak to four straight games. Over the pair of games, Steenbakkers averaged 11.5 points on 75% FG and 100% 3FG, along with 7.0 rebounds per game.

In Wednesday's 76-60 win over STFX, Steenbakkers led the Huskies with a season-high 14 points on 6/7 shooting including 2/2 from three, adding six rebounds, one assist and one steal in 18 minutes played.

In Saturday's 84-56 win over UPEI, Steenbakkers scored nine points on 3/5 shooting including 2/2 from three, adding eight rebounds.

For the season Steenbakkers is averaging 7.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, shooting 51% from the field, 44% from three and 81% from the free-throw line. The Huskies improved to 12-3 on the season and will be back on homecourt Friday, Feb. 2 as they host the UNB REDS.
