Huskies split weekend series with 86-77 win over UNB

(Halifax, NS)—The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the UNB Varsity Reds 86-77 Saturday evening in AUS men's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

Javon Masters paced UNB and all scorers with 32 points and five rebounds in the loss and drop to 9-7 with 24 points in AUS play.

Australian national Dylan Baker (Narre Warren, Victoria) chipped in 18 points for UNB while Mark Matheson's (Summerside, PE) double-double was worth 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Both teams were tied 18-18 after the opening ten minutes and SMU used a 19-15 second quarter score to take a 37-33 lead at half.

The Huskies' 26-21 third quarter increased their cushion to nine after thirty minutes, 63-54.

The final quarter went 23-23 and SMU held on for the 86-77 victory.

Saint Mary's improves to 6-8 with 14 points in conference play.

Mississauga's Brian Rouse paced the Huskies with 26 points and five rebounds on the night.

Theon Reefer (Toronto, ON) added 23 points on seven rebounds and four blocks for SMU while Kemar Alleyne (Scarborough, ON) added 14.

Osman Barrie (Ottawa, ON) recorded his second straight double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds for Saint Mary's.

Achuil Lual (Ottawa, ON) and Kadeem Thompson (Toronto, ON) rounded out the SMU scoring with eight and five points respectively.

The Huskies have three games this week worth twelve points.

They hit the road Tuesday night taking on 3-12 STFX (6 points) and then return home for a two-game home stand versus 10-6 Acadia (24 points) February 12th and 7-8 CBU (18 points) February 13th.  All games start at 8pm.
