Huskies top Panthers 5-1 at home

(Halifax, NS)  Fourth year forward, Gerrad Grant (Halifax, NS) had a goal and an assist as the Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the UPEI Panthers 5-1 at the Halifax Forum Friday night.

Grant's performance garnered him Subway Player of the Game honours.

In the first period, Saint Mary's opened the scoring when Francis Menard (Embrun, ON),  tallied at 3:52 to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. At 8:41 in the first, Saint Mary's extended their lead when Steven Shipley (Ilderon, ON) scored to make the score 2-0 after the first period. 

In the second, after Grant's goal gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead, the Panthers got on the board when Reginaldo Traccittoo (Oakville, ON) potted a marker to cut the lead to 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Saint Mary's got their lead back in the third when first year forward Ben Duffy (Lower Sackville, NS) scored at 5:09 to make the score 4-1. Duffy also added an assist on the night.  The Huskies got further insurance when Stephen Johnston (Guelph, ON) notched a powerplay maker at 14:58 to give the Huskies a 5-1 lead.

The Huskies outshot the Panthers 44-33 in the contest. Anthony Peters (Blyth, ON) made 32 saves to get the win for the Huskies and Mavric Parks (Eganville, ON) stopped 39 shots for the Panthers.

Both teams are right back in action tomorrow night at 7 pm. The Huskies face the St. Thomas Tommies at the Forum, while the Panthers go against the Saint Francis Xavier X-Men in Antigonish.
