Bain scores twice to lead Huskies to 4-1 win over Axemen in season-opener

WOLFVILLE, NS – Saint Mary's defender Woody Bain (Dartmouth, NS) scored a pair of free kick goals, helping lead the Huskies to a 4-1 win over the Acadia Axemen on Friday night.

The Huskies took the lead just one minute into the action, as defender Adam Dunsworth (Halifax, NS) streaked down the right wing, and fired a shot that was saved by Axemen keeper Dylan Legere (Upper Tantallon, NS), but Huskies All-Canadian striker Sean Freeman (Halifax, NS) scored on the rebound to put the visitors up 1-0.

Just over five minutes later, the Huskies would double their lead. Midfielder Colby Mercer (Beaverbank, NS) was fouled at the edge of the box, earning the Huskies a free kick. As the Axemen defenders set up a wall, Bain quickly fired a left-footed shot to the far corner, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

In the final moments of the first half, Bain had another free kick opportunity and made no mistake, firing a rocket from 30 yards out past Legere to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

Acadia's Michael O'Flynn (North Vancouver, BC) cut into the lead in the 52nd minute, but Huskies defender Orion Wiersma (Barrie, ON) would restore the three goal lead after a corner kick scramble in the 81st minute.

Huskies keeper Ryan Davis (Lake Loon, NS) made two saves in the victory, while Dylan Legere made one save in the loss for Acadia.

The Axemen (0-1-0) will now travel to Charlottetown, PEI to face the UPEI Panthers (1-0-0) on Sunday. Saint Mary's (1-0-0) is off until Sunday, Sept. 10 when they face StFX in Antigonish, N.S.
